SEAL was established at The University of Texas at Austin in 2015. Since then, 300 SEAL members have volunteered for over 4,000 hours with local elementary students. We run two different volunteer programs with our partner, Communities in Schools: Reading Buddies and SMART Kids.

In both programs, volunteers carpool together and hang out with kiddos for one hour each week. Reading Buddies are matched with one 1st – 3rd grade student for the entire semester while volunteers in the SMART Kids program work with slightly larger groups in residential communities.

Our goal is simple: to make our kiddos fall in love with us, and in turn, fall in love with reading. Even though we aren’t literacy professionals, we believe that instilling curiosity, confidence, and a love for reading in our children will result in stronger performance down the line. A SEAL is a tutor, mentor, play-pal, and hype man/woman all rolled into one.
